"Cybernetics derives its name from the hugely successful Sirius Cybernetics Corporation, creator of products such as the Happy Vertical People Transporter, Nutri-Matic Drinks Synthesizer and Robots with GPP (Genuine People Personalities). The Guide notes that "it is very easy to be blinded to the essential uselessness of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation's products by the sense of achievement you get from getting them to work at all. In other words - and this is the rock solid principle on which the whole of the Corporation's Galaxy-wide success is founded - their fundamental design flaws are completely hidden by their superficial design flaws."
Unlike the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation, you will have to make not only flawless but also intelligent robots in order to win at MindSpark.
"A race of hyperintelligent pan-dimensional beings once built themselves a gigantic supercomputer called Deep Thought to calculate once and for all the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. For seven and a half million years, Deep Thought computed and calculated, and in the end announced that the answer was, in fact, Forty-two"
.
If you believe that you are as good as these hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings, then join the contest and you might just create the next Deep Thought.
"Far back in the mists of ancient time, in the great and glorious days of the former Galactic Empire, life
was wild, rich and largely tax free. Many men of course became extremely rich, but this was perfectly natural and nothing to be ashamed of because no one was really poor - at least no one worth speaking of. And for all the richest and most successful merchants life inevitably became rather dull and niggly. And thus were created the conditions for a staggering new form of specialist industry: custom-made luxury planet building. The home of this industry was the planet Magrathea, where hyperspatial engineers sucked matter through white holes in space and used it to design dream planets."
Follow in the footsteps of these scientists to design something new, creative, awe-inspiring and totally out of this world. Something worthy of Magrathea.
"The Total Perspective Vortex derives its picture of the whole Universe on the principle of
extrapolated matter analyses. To explain - since every piece of matter in the Universe is in some way affected by every other piece of matter in the Universe, it is in theory possible to extrapolate the whole of creation - every sun, every planet, their orbits, their composition and their economic and social history from, say, one small piece of fairy cake."
Present your ideas in front of an eminent jury and get them to see things from your perspective. The best idea and the best presenter takes the cake.
"The Encyclopaedia Galactica is an encyclopedia of a future galaxy-spanning civilization, containing all the knowledge accumulated by a society with trillions of people and thousands of years of history. It is the standard repository of all knowledge and wisdom in the Universe."
Fortunately, to take part in the quizzes at MindSpark, you need not know all that is there in the Encyclopaedia Galactica. Just some knowledge about the world around you should be enough to win some cool prizes.
"Share and Enjoy" is the motto of the hugely successful Sirius Cybernetics Corporation Complaints division, which now covers the major land masses of three medium sized planets and is the only part of the Corporation to have shown a consistent profit in recent years The motto stands - or rather stood - in three mile high illuminated letters near the Complaints Department spaceport on Eadrax. Unfortunately its weight was such that shortly after it was erected, the ground beneath the letters caved in and they dropped for nearly half their length through the offices of many talented young complaints executives"
At COEP we believe that knowledge grows by sharing. So we have designed workshops especially for you to share our knowledge and have some fun at the same time.
“ In many of the more relaxed civilizations on the Outer Eastern Rim of the
Galaxy, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is now the standard repository of
all knowledge and wisdom, for though it has many omissions and contains much
that is apocryphal, or at least wildly inaccurate, it scores over the older and
more pedestrian work in two important respects. First, it is slightly cheaper,
and secondly it has the words Don't Panic
printed in large friendly letters on its cover.”
Don’t Panic has been created to ensure that during the three days of
MindSpark, you don’t get an overdose of technical knowledge and to ensure that
you Don’t Panic.
